Negative taken of Joseph Albert Booker from the book "How I Succeeded In My Business" by Rev. A.H. Miller published in 1911. Joseph Albert Booker, a leader in black education, was born in Ashley County, Arkansas December 26, 1859. After emancipation, he attended schools in Ashley County and later became a teacher and a preacher. In 1878, he attended Branch Normal College (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. He graduated from the Nashville Institute with a B.A. in 1886 and was ordained a minister. In 1887, he returned to Arkansas and was elected president of the new Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Pulaski County. He was married to Mary J. Carver (b. Jan 1866) of Helena in 1887. He received an honorary M.A. degree from Roger Williams University in 1894 and later received two doctor of divinity degrees from other institutions. In 1900, he lived at 1522 Cross Street in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. In 1913, he also served on the Little Rock Vice Commission. Dr. Booker died in 1926, having served 39 years as president of Arkansas Baptist College.
